Solar Cells for Your Cell Phone

For those of us who are finding ourselves away from power sources to charge up our cell phones, whether it’s due to something like hiking in the mountains or whether it’s because we drive a lot, or anything else–we have a solution. There are a number of companies now that make solar phone chargers. No electrical outlet and your cell phone’s battery is dead? No problem. Just juice it up with the sun’s energy through USB solar chargers.

*DIY Solar Charger–This product shows you the way to make your very own flexible and portable USB Solar Charger via recycled parts of wires, solar outdoor lamps, a USB connector, and a plastic sports cards sleeve.

*Kinesis K3 Portable Wind and Solar Charger — With the Kinesis three-in-one tribrid device, your cell phone and other portable bits of technology such as MP3 player, GPS device, or other gadget, can be charged up by the sun, but also by the wind and the usual AC power adapter. The device’s lithium ion battery stores the charge. TheKinesis is only 3 x 9 x 3 inches, and it can lay flat, stand up, or be hung up. There’s even a storage area hidden within the device, which comes in green or black.

*KODAK Solar Charger KS100-C+2 — Eastman Kodak’s device charges USB devices including iPhones and iPods. The KS100 C+2 gets charged by the sun or by being plugged into a computer’s USB port or some other light source.

*SolarMonkey Solar Charger — PowerTraveller’s foldable device from PowerTraveller can be opened up to reveal a pair of folding protective solar panels. The device also charges with incandescent lighting. While theSolarMonkey stores no power, there is a SolarNut provided with the device, a small battery that does store power and can also be a stand-alone charger. The SolarMonkey also has a travel pouch, Velcro strap, storage case, and tips. PowerTraveller also offers the more expensive SolarGorilla which can charge laptops and notebook computers.

*Solio Hybrid Chargers — these are weather-resistant and light-weight solar chargers, and they also look really good. Charge up with sunlight, or do it via the power from the “wall.”Solios are manufactured from recycled materials, too. These include a high-capacity internal rechargeable battery and various adapter tips and warranty, and they can charge up cell phones, digital cameras,iPods, PDAs, MP3 players, and GPS devices.

*Sun Drive — This 2 ½ by 1 ” solar charger from ZyRUS has been designed to work with many different portable gadgets, and in cell phones one full charge will get you 90 to 100 minutes of uninterrupted talk time.

*Thanko — This device charges up mobile phones and digital cameras. The solar panel is on the backside of the device, which comes with a six-month warranty, and sells for only about $20.00.
